A great thing you could do is before a performance or whenever your audience is gathered in bulk, suggest everyone pull out their phone and "like" the organization's page on facebook, then check in. Tell people they will automatically be placed in a drawing to win <x> prize. Give the rest of your announcements, and then remind them since that since their phones are out, to please turn them off to ensure a quiet performance (if applicable).

I haven't seen an arts organization do this yet, but I am pushing for it as an intern!

We've done a few of these we call them proof of performance pieces and have run them on tv and our in house video. Taking it on line makes sense.

What are some ways of increasing patron engagement with an arts organization on social media outlets?
With any form of social media your organization uses I think it would be a great idea to post short "Thank You" videos aimed to your supporters. This way they see who, and what, they are contributing to. It also makes for a more personal and special interaction between organizations. It could also be possible when using something like Facebook or Foursquare to give your supporters a better experience at your event by giving specials/rewards for "checking in" at your venue. This could be in the form of upgraded house seats(they already purchased their original seats), or other free gifts with the first person to "check in" to the performance. These can provide incentives for people to regularly use your social media platforms.
