Job Description
Bachelor’s required, graduate degree in a related field preferred. Four to seven years in professional development positions, at least four of which are in grant-writing and proposal development. Prior experience managing a fundraising staff. Superior communication skills are imperative. Knowledge of the arts strongly preferred. Computer literacy required.

This position manages a complex set of fundraising campaigns on behalf of the Kennedy Center and VSA arts and requires a very high level of interpersonal, organizational, and written and oral communications skills. The manager must possess the ability to relate well to donors of all levels including board members, corporate executives of small, medium and major national and international corporations, businesses and other professional associations, and their staffs in a professional and easy manner.

Excellent management skills are necessary as the position manages board members and other volunteers during campaigns, as well as a fundraising staff of four. The position works very closely with the Manager, Corporate and Foundation Relations and requires regular collaboration with other development managers with responsibility for specific segments of development programs (e.g., NSO, major gifts, and special events) and with Kennedy Center and VSA arts programming and education staffs in the identification of funding opportunities, and in the preparation of proposals for and solicitation of government agencies, foundations and corporations.

The manager must work closely with Kennedy Center offices of Marketing, Press, Insitutional Affairs, Programming, Education, and Special Events to develop and service funding.

The manager must work closely with the VSA arts executive director and staff to plan and execute effective fundraising strategies for VSA arts including board development, corporate sponsorships, and government grants.


Requirements:
This position reports to the Director, Designated Campaigns. Specific responsibilities include:

Strategic Planning and Designated Support:

Work with Vice President of Development, Director, Designated Campaigns, Kennedy Center management and program staff, board members and volunteer leadership in developing, implementing and evaluating long-term goals and strategies for supporting Kennedy Center and VSA arts programming.

Specific duties related to these functions:

· Act as a primary liaison to the programming and education staff to solicit information about program/project/festival plans as they are developed;
· Evaluate current programs for funding potential and recommend new initiatives based on known interests of funders, and seek out new funding possibilities to establish institutional priorities and areas where collaborative efforts will advance the Center towards achievement of its goals.
· Create project/program/festival funding/sponsorship opportunities including new or one-of-a-kind projects that are specific to the interests of prospects and have the potential for attracting major gifts.
· Identify, cultivate and develop profiles on funding/sponsor prospects (foundation, government, and corporation) including new and nontraditional sources: initiate and build ongoing relationships with current donors and new prospects through meetings, phone calls and occasional entertaining.
· Prioritize fundraising efforts for approval of Director, Designated Campaigns based on the importance of projects or events.
· Develop and supervise the preparation of creative, individually tailored written and/or alternative media presentations for each solicitation including: writing proposals; preparing project budgets; proposing recognition or sponsorship benefits packages specific to the project and the interests of the prospect; and visual and other support materials that enhance the presentation.
· Organize strong solicitations: enlist Board and volunteer leadership and executive management as appropriate to present the best possible proposal or presentation with the aim of securing a positive response from prospects; as necessary and appropriate, personally solicit foundations and corporations, or government agencies.
· Manage follow-up to secure closure of major gifts: provide for any follow-up that is required; negotiate sponsorship agreements and contracts.
· Manage fulfillment and reporting requirements for donors: Coordinate with special events, appropriate Kennedy Center staff and donor staff in the planning and execution of events that involve donors/sponsors including press conferences, receptions, fund-raisers or cultivation events; write materials as necessary to meet requirements for property and donor; supervise the preparation of interim and final written and financial reports.
· Attend committee and board meetings as necessary or assigned. Represent Director, Designated Campaigns at predetermined meetings and events when Director is unavailable. Assist Director in any other projects as needed.

Corporate Annual Support

Direct and manage all activities involved in raising funds for the Kennedy Center’s Corporate Fund, a national and international annual giving campaign currently raising $5 million annually.

Specific duties related to these functions:
· Plan and set strategies and timelines for annual campaigns, and manage activity against those timelines.
· Identify corporations to solicit via all available means, including occasional meetings with volunteers, board members, Kennedy Center management and other staff; develop profiles on corporate prospects including new and non-traditional sources.
· In coordination with other Development managers, develop a solicitation strategy for donors or prospects for approval by Director, Designated Campaigns: match prospects with solicitation approaches based on the best available data; confirm for each prospect primary staff management responsibility in coordination with grants, sponsorships or other department manager for each corporate prospect based on institutional strategy and prospect objectives;
· Initiate and cultivate ongoing relationships with current and new prospects through meetings, phone calls and occasional entertaining.

Management:

· Supervise Assistant Managers, Assistants and Intern in managing all corporate contributions, government grants, and project/program/festival fundraising, as outlined above. Provide sufficient training so as to ensure increasing ability to take on complex projects. Supervise other support staff in production of materials and execution of administrative tasks; provide training to upgrade skills.
· Participate in all Development Department meetings, planning, and campaign implementation for current or long-term operating and capital purposes; attend all development managers meetings.
