Responding to Bad Press Is it wise to write a letter to the editor in response to bad press?
QRecently, my organization has received some bad press due to our poor financial situation. I am planning to write a letter to the editor. Do you think this is a good idea?
A
No, it is a bad idea. It is virtually never helpful to respond to bad press because you simply keep the bad story alive. More people will read about the problem if you insist on writing about it to the paper.
You also risk angering the reporter, who might be important to your organization in the future.
Most people do not read the arts press as carefully as arts managers do, and few remember all the details. Simply let the story die and come back to the press when you have good news to report – artistic news or financial news.
